Remember When Layout

The last of my pictures from our second trip to the Natural History Museum in 2012. I used a Page Maps 5 photo sketch but managed to sneak in two more tiny photos by adding them to the stamped filmstrip pieces. I also went for a mostly black color scheme with just a little bit of kraft and white. I was so tempted to add in other colors, but I'm glad I didn't because I like the way it turned out!

SCS Variety Challenge 204 - Rose Garden

I'm tickled pink to be hosting another Splitcoast Stampers Variety Challenge, and this may be your golden opportunity to try something new and make your friend green with envy over your talent! Okay, enough with the color puns, but hopefully they inspired you to play along using the link below. I'll be really blue if you pass up this chance to have fun (couldn't resist one last pun)!

SBVC204 - Top Marks
I’m a little slow to get on the coloring craze that’s sweeping the scrapbooking and card-making world, but seeing other people’s artwork is getting me motivated! Today’s challenge is to pull out the markers or colored pencils and add some coloring to your layout. You can start with a stamped or digital image, or you can go wild and freehand something. Whatever you decide, you’ll get top marks for completing this challenge!

And now on to my layout. In 2012, we had a membership to the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park, so we went there a lot, and, of course, we took lots of pictures! Here are a few photos of the rose garden that is next to the museum. For those who watch the t.v. show Bones, this is where the exterior shots of the "Jeffersonian" were filmed. Anyone recognize this building?
For my layout, I created a garden border to match the flower garden. The scalloped borders worked nicely as planter borders, and I went to town coloring the stamped flowers. I even popped up a couple to create a 3-D effect.

Family Layout

We managed to get a really nice family photo at our neighbor's wedding. My hubby and the boys were wearing Hawaiian shirts because the wedding had a luau theme, so I went with an island feel for the layout.

Always & Forever Layout

Isn't  Laughing Lola the perfect paper to highlight photos of my neighbor's wedding? I've been trying to figure out an "unusual embellishment" ever since Lasting Memories posted their challenge a couple of weeks ago, and I finally decided to use black pipe cleaners to form a heart and the letter S (our neighbor's new last initial) on my layout. I saved a space for journaling in the lower right hand corner of the layout but didn't write out any yet since I want to add complete names, dates, and location but don't want to publish them for the world to see.

Art Philosophy Welcome Banner

I made this banner for a ladies' luncheon at church and then decided to hang it up in my entryway at home. I had made a welcome banner once before using the Art Philosophy cartridge, so I already had the template saved in Cricut Craft Room, and that gave me a jump start in getting the banner done. I went with flowers and butterflies for the end pennants since it was for a women's event, and the colors are, of course, very girly. Fortunately, my husband doesn't seem to mind!

Butterfly Pavilion Layout

My hubby took some absolutely gorgeous pictures of the butterflies at the Natural History Museum's Butterfly Pavilion, and of course I couldn't decide which ones to scrapbook, so I ended up using them all! I created a single page layout with some of the beautiful butterflies plus a photo of a little girl who accompanied us, and then I used a photo storage page to showcase all the other photos.

And here are a few of the other photos hubby took:

Creating Cards Layout

We're over half way through the month, so I thought it was a good time to revisit this month's sketch challenge and bring you a little more inspiration. Here's the sketch:
I turned the sketch on its side and added a tag with a picture on it. The tag would have also been a great place to put journaling, but I didn't really have much, so the picture worked for me. I realized both my samples this month have been from crafty events! I think I'll try to use the sketch a third time but for a totally different theme. Don't forget you have until the end of the month to play along with the sketch challenge and share your results.

Celebrate {x2} Layout

With two boys, I seldom get to scrapbook girly pages with pink and flowers, so I love doing Mother's Day pages. In 2012, my husband's birthday also fell on Mother's Day, so I had to incorporate the celebration of his special day with Mother's Day. Hopefully this pink, red, green, and blue layout strikes a balance between girly and manly elements!

Anatomy of a Bubble Layout

This month, Lasting Memories challenged us to make our own background for our layout. I wanted something with circles to mimic the bubbles my son was blowing, so I pulled out a piece of textured White Daisy cardstock, placed cut circles in four sizes on the paper, and brayered over the circles. I inked up the brayer with a pretty blue ink (Sky) but must have forgotten to clean the ink off my brayer last time I used it, because I ended up with another color (brown? green?) in the mix. Not what I intended, but I decided to work with it. The circles seemed too stark once I removed the masking circles, so I went over the whole page again with Sky ink to create a more muted feel. I let it dry overnight before adhering the circle overlay, title, and journaling envelope. I kept it pretty simple to let the focus remain on the photos and my background. Hope you like it!

Snowy Hike Layout

This layout came together really quickly with the aid of a CM kit I received about four years ago at a scrapbooking retreat I attended. Since we don't get a lot of snow in Southern California, it's been sitting in my stash, but it seemed perfect for this winter-themed page. The embossed snowflake was hard to see since it was the same color as the background, so I placed it face down on my Indian Corn Blue ink pad and gently tapped on the back of it to apply some color to the embossed sections.

Easter 2012 Layout

This week, Clear It Out Challenges is asking us to create a project that reflects our personal crafting style and uses a favorite product. My style is usually pretty linear and clean (although I've been experimenting a bit more lately) and I almost always use a sketch, so this layout is pretty typical for me. I have two favorite products that I tend to use a lot, brads and ribbon, so I added a little of both to my layout.

Partying with Some Angry Birds Layout

For my son's 7th birthday, I made Angry Bird invitations, and I've been saving the leftover invites in a baggie for the last two years until I finally got around to scrapping this event. Even though the large Angry Bird doesn't seem to be the same shade of red as the patterned paper I chose, hopefully it still works on the layout. If you're interested in directions for making the Angry Bird invitation, check out my original post.

Crazy Hair Day Layout

Happy day after National Scrapbook Day! In case you missed it, I posted a bonus sketch yesterday in honor of NSD, so feel free to pop over and see it, and hopefully you can use it soon. Today's layout was kick-started by a sketch from Paper Secrets. The sketch showed diagonal corners, but I tried to create the same effect with paper strips. Even though the papers I chose don't match the colors of my photos, I keep hearing that matching is not so important anymore, so I thought I'd try it. Hopefully you all will like the results of my experiment!

I didn't include a link-up on this one, but feel free to leave a link in the comments section and I will add your layout to this post. Happy scrapping, everyone!

EMS Sketch Challenge 56 - Crafty Chicks

Welcome to the May sketch challenge! This month's single page sketch lets you focus on a main photo while allowing three smaller photos to support your focal picture. Although the measurements show an 11" long and a 10.5" long piece of  paper, it's possible to piece together shorter scraps to create longer pieces, as long as you hide the "joins" under the photos. Enjoy the sketch, and don't forget to link your completed layout based on the sketch below so I can leave you some love. For every five participants, I will choose a guest designer for July!

The Sketch:
